Missed-Call Text Back, Explained
When you can't answer, the caller gets a text within seconds: "Sorry we missed you, how can we help?" It's the simplest fix for missed calls. Here's how it works, when it's enough and what to watch.
From missed call to text conversation
A call goes unanswered
Your phone system or app detects a missed or voicemail call from a mobile number.
An automatic text goes out
A short message from your business number, usually with your name and a question or a booking link.
The caller replies by text
You, your staff or an AI agent continue the conversation. Many people find texting easier than calling back.
You follow up
The thread becomes a lead, a booking or a callback at a time that suits both of you.
Text back or a full AI receptionist?
Text back is cheaper and simpler, and it doesn't pretend to be a person on the phone. But it only helps callers who text back, and it can't answer a question in the moment.
An AI receptionist answers live. Several include texting too: Upfirst lists two-way texting on every plan, My AI Front Desk includes 400 SMS a month, Dialzara's SMS agent is free with a voice plan, and Rosie can text callers during the call on its Scale plan (all from pricing pages checked Nov 7, 2026).
The texting rules to know
In the U.S., business texts sent from a regular 10-digit number through software fall under carriers' A2P 10DLC system. Twilio's documentation says anyone sending application-to-person texts over a 10DLC number to the U.S. must register a brand and campaign, and unregistered traffic faces extra fees and heavier filtering.
Ask any provider whether it handles that registration for you. For consent and opt-out rules on automated texts, confirm with your provider and, if you're unsure, an attorney; we're not giving legal advice here.
How many calls would text back recover?
Start with how many you miss. The calculator turns it into dollars.
Missed calls are only half the leak
If you pay for Google Ads, a free audit from High Priority Marketing shows where calls come from, which ones you're paying for and where the spend goes. Same owner as this site.
Questions owners ask
What is missed-call text back?
An automation that sends a text to anyone whose call you didn't answer, so they can reply by text instead of calling someone else.
Does missed-call text back work for landline callers?
No. Texts only reach mobile numbers, so landline callers still need voicemail or a callback.
Do I need to register to send automated texts?
If you send through software from a 10-digit U.S. number, carriers expect A2P 10DLC registration. Many providers handle it as part of setup; ask yours.
