What changes the real monthly cost

Minutes vs calls vs callers
Rosie and Dialzara sell minutes, Upfirst and Smith.ai sell calls, Goodcall bills per unique caller. A 4-minute average call uses 250 minutes in about 62 calls.
Overage rates
Extra usage ranges from 15¢ per caller (Goodcall Scale) to $3.00 per call (Smith.ai Free). Busy season can double a bill.
Features gated by plan
Calendar booking and live transfers are on Rosie's $149 Scale plan, not the $49 plan. Upfirst lists texting and transfers on every plan.
Spam handling
Goodcall, Smith.ai and Upfirst say spam doesn't count toward usage. Ask the others how robocalls are billed.

A quick way to estimate your bill

Take last month's call log. Count total calls and average call length. Multiply for minutes-based plans; use the call count for per-call plans; count distinct phone numbers for Goodcall.

Then add a cushion for your busiest month. A plan that's cheap in February can be expensive in July for an HVAC company.

To see whether any of this pays for itself, run your numbers through the missed-call calculator.

Questions

Questions owners ask

What's the cheapest AI receptionist?

Of the plans we checked Nov 7, 2026, Smith.ai has a free plan with 25 calls a month and $3.00 per extra call. The lowest paid plan was Upfirst Starter at $24.95 a month for 30 calls ($20 a month billed annually).

Is an AI answering service cheaper than a live answering service?

Usually per call, yes, because there's no staff time. But compare like for like: count the calls you'd actually send, and check what happens when a caller needs a human.

Do AI receptionists charge setup fees?

Dialzara says monthly billing with no setup fees and Upfirst says no contracts. Others don't state it on the pricing page, so ask before you sign up.
